Kevin T. Smith

Kevin Smith is Special Faculty in the Department of Computer Information Systems in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University, where he teaches CIS 1060: Introduction to Business Analytics. His instruction emphasizes analytical thinking,
data-driven decision-making, and spreadsheet-based modeling to help students build practical business analytics skills. Kevin brings more than two decades of professional experience in systems engineering, enterprise technology management, and IT service delivery in higher education. He currently serves as a Systems Engineer in Information Technology Services at Appalachian State University, focusing on modern endpoint management, cloud services, virtualization, and enterprise infrastructure administration.
In addition to his industry experience, Kevin has taught at both Appalachian State University and Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute, supporting student development in foundational information systems and technology-enabled problem
solving.
Beginning in Fall 2026, Kevin will pursue a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Systems at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His academic interests center on AI and institutional knowledge loss, AI-driven forgetting, automation without memory, invisible knowledge erosion, and improving the higher education information technology experience. Kevin is a U.S. Army veteran and holds an M.A. in Technology Education and a B.S.B.A. in Computer Information Systems from Appalachian State University.
