Dr. Wei Xie is an Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Information Systems from the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an MBA from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, and a bachelor's degree in China.
Dr. Xie's research focuses on human-centered cybersecurity and the governance of information systems in the context of emerging technologies. Her work seeks to better understand how individuals and organizations make security-related decisions and how technology, governance, and human factors interact to influence cybersecurity outcomes. She conducts theory-driven research using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including advanced psychometric techniques, experimental research, and mixed-method approaches. Her recent research expands into large language model (LLM) analytics and NeuroIS, exploring how emerging technologies can enhance cybersecurity research, decision-making, and human-centered security. Her award-winning research on phishing investigates the behavioral mechanisms underlying online deception and informs more effective cybersecurity awareness, training, and defense strategies.
Dr. Xie is equally committed to preparing the next generation of independent cybersecurity and information systems professionals. Her teaching emphasizes experiential learning, critical thinking, and the integration of academic knowledge with industry practice. She teaches courses in information systems management, IT auditing and cybersecurity analysis, and digital innovation and disruptive technologies, encouraging students to understand not only the technologies themselves but also their organizational and societal implications. Guided by a philosophy of continuous improvement, she strives to create engaging learning environments that foster intellectual curiosity, lifelong learning, and the professional competencies needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Dr. Xie actively contributes to the information systems research community through editorial, conference, and professional service. She serves as an Associate Editor for the Cybersecurity and Privacy Track of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), the premier international conference in the information systems discipline, and as an NSF review panelist for the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). She is also the Organizing Chair of the Annual Security Conference (ASC), a reviewer for leading information systems journals and conferences, and an active member of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), including its special interest groups on Security (SIGSEC) and Decision Support and Analytics (AISDSA), as well as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). Through these roles, she contributes to advancing cybersecurity and information systems research while fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
Before entering academia, Dr. Xie built a diverse career spanning both the pharmaceutical and financial technology industries. After earning her MBA, she worked as a pharmaceutical market analyst before founding a software company that developed bond trading systems, where she spent more than a decade leading the development and operations of financial software. These experiences continue to inform her applied approach to research, teaching, and industry engagement. Through her scholarship, teaching, and service, she is committed to advancing cybersecurity education, preparing future-ready professionals, and bridging academic research with real-world practice.
